Objective: SKAT Rwanda contracted UPCE Consult Ltd to conduct an inventory of available brickyards and suitable fuels for building material production across five districts of Rwanda's Western Province. Scope & Methodology: Our scope included identifying all producers and main building material selling points, identifying main construction companies and their service offerings, and assessing environmental aspects alongside the operational evaluation of each brickyard. We identified the existing brickyards, evaluated their operational capacity, and analyzed the suitability of various fuel sources for brick production, examining their impacts on land use, resource sustainability, energy efficiency, and waste management strategies. Key Deliverables: A comprehensive report cataloguing brickyards and construction material producers across the five districts, an operational capacity assessment, and a fuel-suitability and environmental-impact analysis with recommendations for sustainable brick production practices. Impact: The inventory gave SKAT Rwanda and local stakeholders a clear, evidence-based view of the local brick manufacturing industry, highlighting resource and fuel options that promote environmentally responsible practices across the Western Province.
